NEW DELHI: Are you smart, intelligent and 18? Then stop worrying about quotas and think Ivy League -- that too with full financial aid. That was Yale professor and director of its world fellows programme Daniel Esty making his pitch for India’s best and brightest. Yale, which recently expanded its under-graduate financial aid programme along with Harvard, Stanford and University of Pennsylvania, is now emphasising its affordability as well as accessibility. Parents of undergrads whose annual income is less than $45,000 (or about Rs 20 lakh) no longer have to pay any portion of the cost of education. Full financial aid includes tuition, room and board. What’s more, Esty says there’s no cap on the number of foreign students. Currently, Yale has 125 Indian students out of 11,000 students and would be happy to hike the number. "We want to attract the best talent and lack of funds should not come in the way of a student applying," he said. Yale offers aid -- full or part -- to 60% of undergrads and its financial aid budget for 2006-07 is approximately $59 million, an 8% increase over last year. In addition, all international students will get tickets for one return trip home every year. "We noticed that many foreign students were not going home during the vacation because they could not afford the journey. The tickets will help make their Yale experience as positive as possible," said George Joseph, assistant secretary of international affairs at Yale.

Crew of Pyare Mohan turn Bangkok into Diwali city , celebrate esha's b'day !

Producer Ashok Thakeria and director Indra Kumar has been camping in Bangkok for their forthcoming film 'Pyaare Mohan'. It's starring Vivek Oberoi, Fardeen Khan, Esha Deol and Amrita Rao. Ashok Thakeria says, "Since all the members of the unit were feeling sad that they couldn't come home to celebrate Diwali, we decided to turn Bangkok into Diwali dhamaka city - full of fun and frolic. We organized flowers and decorated the pace where we were shooting. Later, we also burst crackers and dances to the songs from our movie and after midnight we all gathered together and celebrated Esha's B'day by cutting a huge cake."

U T V International is on a roll! After the success of RANG DE BASANTI and TAXI NO. 9211 collections of the U T V distributed T-Series production, HUMKO DEEWANA KAR GAYE, in the UK on the opening day (Friday, 14th April) notched a staggering £50,000 in addition to the select previews on Thursday, which garnered £16,000. The two-day gross of the film is nearly £66,000. The trade is pegging its entire Easter weekend gross to be in the range of £180,000 - £200,000. This would be among the highest ever openings for a solo Akshay Kumar-starrer in the UK.

NEW DELHI: NASSCOM, the trade body and the chamber of commerce for the IT software and services industry in India, announced the key findings of its 'IT User Survey 2005' and the winners of the 'India IT User Awards 2005'.
Kiran Karnik, President, NASSCOM noted, “Increasing IT usage and adoption within the country is enhancing competitiveness of the Indian economy and the user community. Today, we see Indian businesses becoming increasingly competitive in the global market, using IT as a key enabler. Our survey indicates the trend among Indian IT vendors to increase their focus on the domestic market. Also, the user industry in India is outsourcing parts or entire IT infrastructure to specialized vendors, which requires world-class standards, and best practices.” He noted that while there is increased IT adoption by user organizations in the country, both at an operational and advanced levels, the ongoing phase of investment by the industry will need a gestation period to exhibit its full potential. This will ensure maximum return on investments for organizations. The industry will need to continue the existing focus on sustaining this growth curve through investments and adoption. “We hope the government will also become a major user of IT through the e-governance program. A favorable policy and taxation regime will give a boost to greater IT usage in the country with benefits to efficiency, productivity and employment”, Karnik added. Recognizing the growing importance and potential of the domestic market, NASSCOM has been focusing on this segment, which is expected to reach $4.3 billion in 2005-06, from the $3.5 billion in 2004-05. A milestone in this direction has been the creation of the Domestic IT Market Committee, and the commissioning of an in-depth analysis of the Domestic Services (IT-ITES) market opportunity report, in 2006. Nasscom's annual survey seeks to assess IT usage among key industry verticals, and recognize leaders thereby creating a benchmark within verticals and the domestic user industry.
